Background of the Study
Nurses play a crucial role in healthcare delivery, providing essential patient care, assisting in medical procedures, and ensuring continuity of services. However, poor working conditions, salary disparities, and inadequate staffing often lead to industrial actions by nurses, disrupting healthcare services and raising policy concerns (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, nursing associations, such as the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), frequently advocate for improved welfare through strike actions, with significant implications for healthcare policy (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
Borno State, already challenged by conflict-related healthcare disruptions, has witnessed several nurses’ strikes in recent years due to unresolved labor disputes. These strike actions have led to increased patient mortality rates, reduced hospital efficiency, and a decline in public trust in the healthcare system (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). While strike actions serve as a mechanism for nurses to demand better conditions, their long-term implications for health policy and service delivery remain under-researched.
This study evaluates nurses’ strike actions in Borno State and examines their implications for health policy formulation and implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Frequent strike actions by nurses in Borno State disrupt healthcare services, leaving patients without essential medical care and burdening the remaining workforce (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). While labor unions argue that strikes are necessary to advocate for better working conditions, the long-term consequences of these actions on health policy and patient care require critical analysis (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
The limited responsiveness of policymakers to nurses’ demands exacerbates the problem, as unresolved grievances lead to recurring strikes. This study seeks to examine the causes and effects of nurses’ strike actions and explore strategies for balancing labor rights with effective healthcare policy development in Borno State.
